The East Congo Episcopal Area, located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, includes three annual conferences, 18 districts, 846 local churches and more than 40,000 church members. The East Congo Episcopal Area formerly was one of six annual conferences of the Central Congo Episcopal Area, which covered 10 of the DRC’s 11 provinces. Bishop David Yemba Kekumba served the area. During the 2012 General Conference in Tampa, Fla., delegates voted to divide the Central Congo Episcopal Area into two parts presided over by Bishop David Yemba Kekumba and a new bishop to be elected at the Congo Central Conference.
On Aug. 23, 2012, delegates elected Gabriel Unda Yemba bishop of this new episcopal area. It covers five provinces of DRC (Maniema, Equator, Oriental, North and South Kivu) and the Republic of Central Africa). The East Congo Episcopal Area focuses on rebuilding infrastructures and the spiritual, economic and social life of the people living in this part of the DRC, as they recover from repeated wars of liberation.
Our vision is summarized in Nehemiah 2:18,”Let’s rise up and build.”
